On this #WorldTeachersDay, let me use this opportunity to celebrate all Teachers, at every level of education, across Nigeria.
I believe that governments at all levels must do everything to ensure that they provide their citizens with qualitative education. And this includes paying teachers promptly, and creating an environment for them to thrive and excel.
What are we as the Federal Government doing?
We are supporting the State and Local Governments, who employ the
majority of our Primary and Secondary School Teachers, to enable them
pay salaries as and when due. When I assumed office as President that
was one of the things that saddened me the most -- the non-payment of
salaries by many States, to civil servants, including teachers.
This was why we wasted no time providing, in July/August 2015, Intervention Funds to State Governments, along with a Debt Restructuring Programme, to enable them better cope in their difficult financial circumstances.
In the last few months we have followed up with a new and conditional 90 billion naira Budget Support Fund, again to enable the States cope with the shortfalls in their allocations arising from the drop in oil prices, and the activities of vandals and militants in the Niger Delta.
We are also this year hiring half a million young teachers across the country, as part of our N-Power Job Creation Scheme. Recruitment is ongoing as we speak - you can find the details here: https://portal.npower.gov.ng/
Finally, our School Feeding Programme, launching with the new School Year, will provide millions of children with nutritious meals, to improve learning outcomes, as well as enrolment and completion rates. We know that happy and satisfied students will make the work of our Teachers even easier.
I wish all our Teachers a Happy #WorldTeachersDay. I especially remember Kasimu Adamu Zangon-Daura, my Junior Primary School Teacher.
Who is the first Teacher you remember?
