Ben Bruce 'It is almost certain Nigeria will go into a recession this year'

It is almost certain that Nigeria will go into a recession this year, but rather than fix the situation we are all more concerned about who is to blame.

Nigerians want to blame President Muhammadu Buhari or the government but how does that help our situation?

The truth is that if we want to find someone to blame, we should each individually look at a mirror.
Why?

As Nigerians we are so crazy about foreign products and services. We fly British Airways when we could have flown Arik. We buy imported cars when we could have bought Innoson cars with less money. We eat Kellogg's corn flakes when Nasco is even more nutritious not to talk of being cheaper and then we expect President Buhari to wave a magic wand and increase the value of the Naira!

The value of the Naira is tied to our production as a people and our consumptive habits.
There is no shortcut to improving the value of the Naira. Every time we buy a foreign product, value leaves Nigeria and is added to the country from which that product emanates.
I drive an Innosson car. I also bought it for my staff. I fly Arik. My staff also fly Arik. I eat Nasco corn flakes as do my staff.

Some Nigerians say the quality of these products and services are not comparable to those of their foreign competitors.

And that is exactly my point. Those foreign brands get better the more you patronize them and the same thing will happen to Nigerian brands. The more we consume them the more money they will make and the more money they make the more their products and services will improve.

When I was a child, Japanese products were known for being sub standard. Did the Japanese abandon their manufacturers? No. They continued to show their patriotism by patronizing them. Today, Japanese products have so improved that they are know worldwide for quality.

Some of you remember the same thing about Chinese products. Today China is now known as the world's largest manufacturers.

Our own manufacturers and producers must pass through the same phase but we must be patriotic enough to stand by them. If we don't fly Arik is it foreigners that will? If we don't eat ofada rice is it Americans that will eat it?
We must first love our own before others can love it. If Chinese people refused to patronize Chinese restaurants would Chinese food have conquered the whole world?

Government also has its role to play. I guarantee you that if The Naira WILL appreciate if all government ministries, departments and agencies as well as most Nigerians buy Innoson cars, use Zinox PCs and laptops, fly Arik, port to Glo, eat Nasco corn flakes and Ofada rice and wear Kano and Aba made slippers.
There is no other way to save the situation other than by ‪#‎BuyNaijaToGrowTheNaira‬
